On March 31 2026, the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS), through Tshepo Tlhacoane, were present at the March meeting of the Economic Empowerment Working Group, which was held at the offices of the World Food Programme in Amman, Jordan.
This Working Group was established by the United Nations Refugee Agency’s (UNHCR) Inter-Agency Task Force, and aims to bring humanitarian and development actors together in order to expand sustainable development opportunities for refugees and host communities in Jordan.
The meeting contained a presentation by UNHCR on the findings of their Socio-Economic Survey on Refugees in Jordan, specifically in relation to the employment of refugees. Thereafter, there was a presentation by colleagues from the World Bank on their Agriculture Resilience, Value Chain Development, and Innovation (ARDI) programme, which discussed challenges to Jordan’s agricultural sector. Finally, there was a presentation by the International Labour Organization on the Tasree project, which seeks to create decent employment opportunities for Syrian refugees and vulnerable Jordanians, with a particular focus on women and youth.
The economic empowerment of all people in the Arab Region is central to a number of our priorities, specifically women’s rights, youth rights, and social protection. We will continue to work with all relevant actors on matters of common concern.
