An Appeal by the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies Against the Threats and Use of Nuclear Weapons

To organizations, human rights defenders, nuclear disarmament activists, members of the international community, and all who seek peace,

The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS) expresses its deep concern for humanity and international peace, as well as for the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons. Along with other human rights organizations worldwide, the ACHRS has repeatedly called upon the international community to eliminate these weapons, which are destructive to all of humanity and nature.

This concern stems from recent public statements and warnings that have raised serious alarm among people globally regarding the potential use of nuclear weapons, a risk heightened by escalating tensions, acts of aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. This situation demands that the international community, most notably the United Nations and global peace movements, address the matter with the utmost seriousness.

The ACHRS condemns with utmost disdain the brandishing of nuclear weapons, whether as a military option, a negotiating tool, or a means of political intimidation against states and peoples.

The ACHRS recalls the use of American nuclear bombs against the Japanese people toward the end of the Second World War, as well as accidents at civilian nuclear reactors in various countries since. These events resulted in massive human casualties among civilians, exposure to dangerous levels of radiation, environmental contamination, and long-term health consequences that affected neighboring nations and subsequent generations. Should modern nuclear weapons be deployed, the resulting devastation would far exceed anything humanity has previously known.

Therefore, the ACHRS urges all those committed to upholding global peace and security to:

  1. Reject any threat, or consideration, of using nuclear weapons against another state. 2. Call upon all states to exercise the utmost restraint to avoid nuclear escalation.
  2. Encourage diplomatic mediation initiatives to resolve conflicts peacefully and prevent any backsliding toward the use of nuclear weapons in this and any future conflict.
  3. Strengthen international efforts, particularly those of the United Nations, aimed at the gradual disarmament of nuclear weapons and the realization of a world free from such arms.

Humanity is in need of peace founded on justice; development rooted in equality and dignity; governance based on transparency and the fight against corruption worldwide; the construction of a global civilization built upon dialogue; respect for human rights and the rights of peoples, including the right to self-determination, with the people as the source of all authority; and cooperation based on shared interests.

Let us work together to protect human life, defend international peace and security, and strive toward nuclear disarmament as part of a broader effort to eliminate all weapons of mass destruction.
