Meeting: Education Sector Working Group
On Tuesday, 10 February 2026, the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS), represented by Filipe Kalgaard and Tshepo Tlhacoane, attended a meeting of the Education Sector Working Group at the offices of the Norwegian Refugee Council in Amman, Jordan.
The Education Sector Working Group, which was established by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and its partners to coordinate education interventions, serves as a coordination platform, and includes the participation of donors, United Nations agencies, and civil society organizations.
The meeting primarily centered around the legal amendment by the Jordanian Ministry of Education to raise school fees for non-Jordanian students in public schools, which should impact 15,000 students out of 48,000 non-Jordanian students in the public school system. Also discussed were the rationale of the fees, the groups of people who would be exempt from paying the fees, and the possible consequences that the fee increases would have, such as the possible increase in the dropout of learners.
ACHRS joined this Working Group after meeting with the Inter-Agency Coordination Unit of UNHCR as there is a close relationship between our seven priorities and refugee rights. ACHRS’ commitment to the advancement of education in Jordan and the Arab Region does not exclude refugees, as their education, like non-refugees, will lead to their economic and social development.
ACHRS will continue to engage with members of the various Working Groups on matters of common concern.
