Tuesday 23rd April, 2019 – Statement condemning the attacks in Sri Lanka (21.04.19)

The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies strongly condemns the horrific attacks that occurred on the afternoon of Easter Sunday, 2019. The attacks targeted St. Anthony’s Shrine in Colombo, St. Sebastian’s in Negombo, and Zion Church in Batticaloa, along with explosions at 3 hotels and 2 other locations in Colombo. Today, official figures show that the death toll has reached 310 civilians with more than 500 people suffering from injuries.
The Center extends its deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, and wishes those who were injured a quick and full recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy.
All people hold the right to life, liberty and personal security as well as freedom of religion including the right to worship and observe holidays, both in private and in public. This attack targeted worshippers on one of the most sacred days in the Christian calendar. Such senseless acts of violence have threatened the very heart of Sri Lankan society, a country which prides itself in the cohesiveness of its various communities. The Center stands in solidarity with the government and citizens of Sri Lanka.
