‘The Role of the Army in Egypt 10 years after Tahrir’ is a webinar hosted by the European Institute of the Mediterranean with the participation of Professor Yezid Sayigh, senior research fellow at the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut, where he leads the program on Civil-Military Relations in Arab States. In this lecture, he argues that the Egyptian Army has never had such a degree of power over Egyptian society and its institutions. This is for three fundamental reasons. First, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s administration has eliminated all potential political adversaries. Second, the military has expanded its role in the economy. Third, the military has changed its relationship with civil society.
