Strategic Planning Meeting on the First Draft of a “Universal Declaration of Academic Freedoms”

This past weekend, ACHRS held a strategic planning meeting on the first draft of the “Universal Declaration of Academic Freedoms” as a part of our longstanding efforts to promote democratic speech and though.

ACHRS first participated in the 2004 Conference on Academic Freedoms in Arab Universities, in which the foundations of this document were formed. Additional accomplishment of the center include the establishment of the center include the establishment of the Amman Center for Academic Freedoms in Arab Universities in 2013 and organizations of the 2015 Conference on the Independence of Universities held in Tunis in conjunction with Manouba University. 

The session was attended by: Dr. Wajih Qansouh / Professor of Philosophy at the Lebanese University, Dr. Jamal Shalabi / Professor of Political Science at the Hashemite University, Dr. Hamdi Qubyilat / Professor of Law at the International Islamic Science University, Dr. Abdullah Naqrash / Professor of Political Science at the University of Jordan, Dr. Amer Al-Hafi / Associates Professor of Comparative Interfaith at Al-ALBayt University, Dr. Tayseer Abu Odeh / Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature at the Arab Open University, Dr. Hashim Nassar / Legal Consultant and Arbitration Expert.

The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies will continue to campaign for academic freedom by holding a series of national, regional, and international events to promote a culture of awareness and advocacy for this human rights issues. ACHRS anticipates submitting a proposal to UNESCO in the hope that it will be considered for adoption into the Universal Declaration on Human and Peoples Rights.
