Recommendations from the Round Table on the Right to Life and the Death Penalty with MPs

The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies held a round table this past weekend with fifteen deputies from the Jordanian House of Representatives, including the President of the Jordanian Parliament His Excellency Engineer Atef al Tarwneh.
Attendees participated in an interactive and extensive dialogue on the right to life in Jordanian laws. Dr. Nizam Assaf facilitated discussion with two papers focusing on this area. The first entitled “The Right to Life in the Face of the Death Penalty” prepared by Dr.Mohamed AL Nsour and the other entitled “The Limitation to the Death Penalty through the Restriction of Conditions” prepared by Dr. Hamdi Morad. After the two days discussions, the participants of the round table on the Right to Life and the Death Penalty concluded with the following recommendations.

Finally, in order to start implementing these recommendations, the legislative body must adhere to Article 95 of the Jordanian Constitution which stipulates in the first paragraph that ten or more members of either House of Representatives may propose new laws or amendments. If the Council considers the proposal to be accepted, it shall be referred to the Government for drafting a bill and submitted to the Council at the same session or at the next session.
