Panel discussion on women’s participation in decision-making positions
Within the framework of the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies program to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Center organized the sixth activity in cooperation with the Mulayh Sports Club from Madaba and the Parallel Youth Council in Mulauh, on “Women’s participation in decision-making positions “
.Three women models were represented in the province of Dheban (pioneers in public work). They are also members of the Madaba governorate council, they are: Asma al-Ruhanna, member of the Mulayh municipal council, Alia al-Aktash, and head of the youth association Mulauh Felihah al-Qubailat. They emphasized the importance of women’s participation in public work and thus their access to decision-making positions.
Al-Aktash confirmed that she was nominated for the membership in the municipality council in order to serve her country and society and that she was happy to start this new experience.
Asma al Rawahneh, member of the provincial council, said that Jordan has qualified women who are able to be part of decision-making positions. She affirmed to have trust in them and that there has been proof with previous successful experiences at the municipal, parliament, associations and management levels of government and private institutions. There are a large number of women who are leaders from all age groups.
Felihah AL Qubailat spoke about her personal experience as the President of the Young Women Association of Mulauh and former President of the Women’s Union, in Madaba and as a former member of the municipality of Lib and Mulauh. She spoke about her experience in running for the recent parliamentary elections in which she was not elected. She focused on the election law and said that it is unfair to many groups, including women. She also stressed that women’s presence in small and disadvantaged villages and towns far from Amman increases their determination and the will to work for their country in order for it to move forward.
Dr.Nizam Assaf, the director of ACHRS spoke about Jordanian women in general and the importance of them playing a role parallel to the role of men in society. He stressed the importance of the participation of citizens’ (male and female) participation in the management of the state and the society.
Ms. Haya Qabailat, who participated in the 13th class of the Jordanian Institute for Women Leaders, moderated the discussion. She summarized the constructive discussions that took place in the seminar by the participants as follows: The women from the province of Dheban have been active in the public work for many years and their experience is positive and it’s seen as a stimulating experience for other women, The women from Dheban received the support of all (men and women), and this province has proved on several occasions that it chooses the competent person regardless of whether he is a man or she is a woman. She added that this indicates a great step that the society has made in the province of Dheban to get out of the masculine mentality. However, there are still several factors that play a role in obstructing the access of competent women or even men to decision-making positions, including black money or political money, and bias to the “party” of the clan, in addition to the weakness of employment opportunities for women on the one hand and to compete in the quota limits on the another hand.
