ACHRS, ACADP and JCADP welcomes the Lebanese Parliament’s decision to abolish the death penalty calls on Arab States to follow Lebanon’s lead

On 11 August 2026, the Lebanese Parliament voted to abolish the death penalty — a decision that, once signed into law, will make Lebanon the first country in the Middle East to fully abolish capital punishment. In a joint statement, the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS), the Arab Coalition against the Death Penalty (ACADP), and the Jordan Coalition against the Death Penalty (JCADP) welcome this milestone and call on other Arab states to follow Lebanon’s lead.

The statement traces the decades-long path to this vote, situates it against a troubling regional rise in executions, and outlines concrete steps ACHRS, ACADP and JCADP are calling on Arab states, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to take.
