Happy International Women’s Day!

ACHRS stands in solidarity with women against violence, discrimination, and oppression.

Amman Center for Human Rights Studies Statement on March 8

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS) reaffirms its commitment to making every effort to support women around the world and to uphold the rights of all women and girls, as stipulated in the Beijing Declaration and its Program of Action.

This year, International Women’s Day comes against the backdrop of continued violence against women and girls globally, with one in three women around the world experiencing some form of violence in their lifetime. The misuse of AI exacerbates the risks that all women and girls face every day, including the reinforcement of harmful stereotypes through biased algorithms that prioritize male perspectives on digital platforms, ignoring women’s lived experiences.

On this International Women’s Day, we call on all governments to:

  • First: Ensure immediate legal action to protect all women and girls from all forms of gender-based violence.
  • Second: Implement strong protections on all online platforms from incidents of violence, harassment and discrimination that occur on platforms.
  • Third: Ensure that all survivors of violence have access to psychological support services and support their right to physical and mental health services and legal aid for all women and girls.
  • Fourth: Focus on the stories, voices and experiences of women behind bars in racist, classist and patriarchal legal systems around the world, especially women facing the death penalty and its arbitrary, discriminatory and dehumanizing application;
  • Fifth: Protect the voices of women, marginalized groups, media voices and media institutions critical of oppressive structures in various countries around the world.
  • Sixth: Strengthen legislation to protect gender equality and build a society free of misogyny and sexism.
  • Seventh: Promote equal opportunities and rights for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.

Finally, the Amman Center calls on the women of the world to show active solidarity with the women of Palestine as they face war crimes, genocide, ethnic cleansing and displacement by the Israeli occupation forces.
