Statement on the Sudan Monitor Published by ACHRS
The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS) has recently published a comprehensive Sudan Monitor , highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The report underscores the alarming situation in Sudan, where widespread violence and human rights violations continue to unfold. The monitor details the indiscriminate targeting of civilians, ethnically motivated violence, forced displacement, and gender-based violence. It also points out the dire conditions facing refugees in host countries, where discriminatory practices and lack of access to essential services exacerbate their plight. Nonetheless, ACHRS remains one of the few centers in the MENA region to aim to publish such detailed monitors on the Sudan conflict, providing critical insights into the violations of international humanitarian law. As such, the conflict is in need of wider attention among humanitarian and legal experts in the region, especially considering the human rights violations that are being committed in Sudan.
At ACHRS, our view is that the democratic participation of civil actors is crucial to the resolution of the conflict, and that there is a need to reduce the influence of the military over the political process. We also call for an end to foreign intervention, which has exacerbated the civil unrest in the country. The involvement of all stakeholders in a transparent and inclusive dialogue is crucial to achieving a peaceful resolution. Moreover, the monitor strongly highlights the impact that this conflict has had on non-Arab communities and ethnic minorities, showcasing the ethnic dimensions of this conflict. As part of resolving the conflict in the Sudan, the center calls for an end to the systemic targeting of ethnicities in Sudan, an issue that has long characterized humanitarian catastrophes in Sudan.
Furthermore, the report highlights Sudan’s urgent need for broader humanitarian attention, especially that refugees are struggling to access basic necessities. The humanitarian crisis demands immediate action to address the shortage of food, water, and medical supplies. The international community and regional organizations must collaborate to ensure that aid reaches those in need, and that the rights of refugees and displaced persons are protected. It is crucial for civil society groups to play a proactive role in advocating for the rights of the Sudanese people and to provide much-needed humanitarian assistance.
ACHRS is committed to monitoring and publishing monthly monitors on Sudan, aiming to provide coverage of key updates in the country, shedding light on the humanitarian disaster facing the Sudanese people. The center is particularly committed to producing a legal analysis on the situation Sudan using international humanitarian law to showcase the violations that are being committed in the country, hoping that further action will be taken to put an end to the war.
