Nuclear Abolition Day – Towards a World Free of Nuclear Weapons

On the occasion of the Nuclear Abolition Day on September 26th, ACHRS wants to express its conviction that nuclear disarmament should be pursued within the shortest possible timeframe. Nuclear weapons pose a threat to humanity and to the earth and go directly against the priorities and goals of ACHRS. For this reason, ACHRS has endorsed the joint appeal for the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, which was shared with the New York Missions of all UN Member States and was presented to the High Level Meeting of Presidents, Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers and Ambassadors at the United Nations on September 26th, 2025.

In 2013, the UN General Assembly declared the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on September 26th. This day is meant to raise awareness about the dangers that nuclear weapons pose, as well as the benefits of nuclear abolition.

The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS) is one of the many organisations that has endorsed the Joint Appeal for the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. As said by UN Secretary General António Guterres, “Nuclear weapons deliver no security – only the promise of annihilation.”

ACHRS believes that nuclear weapons pose a serious threat to humanity and to our world, and that their existence sends out the wrong message – namely that of violence and aggression rather than dialogue and cooperation. In times of immense conflict, and a disregard for human rights and international law, civil society calls more than ever for nuclear disarmament, a step that would restore some faith in international society and would be a meaningful step towards global peace.

As such, ACHRS, along with the other endorsers of the Joint Appeal for the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, calls on leaders, legislators, and officials at all levels of government to:

  • Affirm that the threat or use of nuclear weapons is inadmissible;
  • Advance tangible measures by nuclear-armed and allied States to implement this obligation, including standing down nuclear forces and adopting policies never to initiate a nuclear war;
  • Pledge to achieve the global elimination of nuclear weapons no later than the UN’s centennial anniversary in 2045, and immediately undertake actions, including through multilateral negotiations, to implement this pledge;
  • Cut nuclear weapons budgets, and end public and private investments in the nuclear weapons industry; and
  • Redirect these funds to strengthen the United Nations, advance peacekeeping and conflict resolution, accelerate steps to protect the climate, and meet human and economic needs as required under Article 26 of the UN Charter.
