FILM SCREENING: “STORIES ON HUMAN RIGHTS”

AMMAN CENTER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS WITH THE COLLABORATION OF THE FRENCH INSTITUTE

In November 27, 2018, the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS) organized a film screening entitled “Stories on Human Rights” that took place at the French Institute in Amman.

This film screening was part of a series of events that ACHRS has being carrying out since September 2018 to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The events consisted of conferences, lectures, trainings and seminars covering various human rights topics, taking place in Amman and in six other governorates in Jordan. The celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the UDHR will culminate in December 10 (Human Rights Day) with an event under the patronage of His Excellency Prime Minister Dr. Omar Al-Razzaz. Representatives of the United Nations, the European Union Delegation to Jordan, and several embassies will give speeches about the UDHR and issues on human rights in Jordan.

“Stories on Human Rights” consists of 22 short movies lasting 3 minutes each. Due to explicit content, one of these movies was cut from the movie screening.  The movies were shown at the French Institute and produced by Art for The World, a non-governmental organization based in Geneva and Milan, in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Several filmmakers, artists and writers realized this project back in 2008 to mark the 60th Anniversary of the UDHR. The movies represent social issues and concerns relevant to human rights; issues ACHRS considers relevant to this day.

“Stories on Human Rights” covers six main themes relevant to the UDHR, such as: culture, development, dignity and justice, environment, gender, and participation. The movies were shot in more than 15 countries around the world and in different languages. All expressed, through an artistic lens, a message about the importance of the rights contained in the UDHR.

Valeria Cristofoli, the International Relations Unit Coordinator of ACHRS, briefly introduced ACHRS and the short movies. She thanked the French Institute for hosting the guests and screening the short movies. She also thanked Art for The World for sharing the movies free of charge and for giving ACHRS the opportunity to show them to a crowd composed of Jordanians and foreigners. Around 65 people were present during the movie screening.
