Meeting: Protection Working Group – May 2026

Written by: Tshepo Tlhacoane

Members of the Protection Working Group gathered for their monthly meeting. The meeting, which took place on the 6th of May, saw members attend both online and in-person at the offices of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Amman, Jordan.

The Protection Working Group, which is chaired by UNHCR and the National Council for Family Matters, aims to:

  1. Ensure that people are the center of all actions and that no one is left behind
  2. Advocate for the inclusion of refugees in national systems
  3. Forge stronger strategic partnerships and deepen collaboration with development actors to bridge humanitarian and developmental efforts, and
  4. Invest in local and national capacities to deliver sustainable protection solutions.

Tshepo Tlhacoane represented the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS) in this meeting, whose agenda included operational updates by UNHCR, a presentation by UN Women on the Policy Brief on Gender Dynamics in the Refugee Response, an update from the Institute for Family Health on the disability programmes and services they provide for refugees with disabilities, and a UNHCR-led discussion on the evolution of civil documentation for refugees in Jordan.

At ACHRS, we believe in the premise that no one should be left behind when it comes to the protection of human rights. Engaging with colleagues in these working groups allows us to recognize that refugees are not monolithic, and that different people require different forms of protection. These working groups enhance ACHRS’ ability to advocate for the protection of rights of the largest number of people, and we reaffirm our commitment to help protect the rights of all people in the Arab Region, including the refugees.
