Amman Center participates in organizing a workshop on protecting children’s rights according to United Nations mechanisms

Saint Joseph’s University in Lebanon and as part of the Master’s Program in Human Rights and Democracy in the Arab Region, organized a workshop titled “Protecting Children’s Rights According to UN Mechanisms.” The event was held in partnership with the Agence  Universitaire de la Francophonie, the Global Campus for Human Rights, the Training and Documentation Center of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Faculty of Arts at the University of Jordan, and the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS).

The workshop, which took place in Amman over three days (December 13–15, 2024), comprised ten sessions addressing various aspects of child protection within the framework of international and UN mechanisms. The topics covered included the protection of children under international law (International Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, and International Criminal Law), mechanisms within the UN human rights system, the prevention of violence, abuse, and exploitation, and the role of treaty bodies, especially the Committee on the Rights of the Child. Other discussions focused on non-treaty mechanisms such as the Human Rights Council, the Universal Periodic Review, and special procedures.

Sessions also explored issues like children in conflict with the law and access to justice. A seminar was held on violations of children’s rights during armed conflicts, featuring key presentations from Gaza, Yemen, and Sudan. The workshop concluded with presentations of findings from group work.

Nineteen students participated in the workshop, including 15 from Jordan, Palestine, Syria, and Yemen. At the closing ceremony, Professor Mohammad Al-Qudah, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Jordan, distributed certificates to the participants.
