August 2024: Key Developments in the Arab World
ACHRS Publishes Human Rights Monitor for August 2024

This month’s Human Rights Monitor analyzes developments in six priority areas concerning human rights in the Arab world during August. This review includes a legal analysis based on international humanitarian law.
Firstly, the report addresses the right to life, a fundamental human right frequently violated in the Middle East and North Africa. Violations often arise from legislation allowing extrajudicial killings, particularly targeting specific groups for political reasons. The ongoing genocide in Gaza highlights severe human rights abuses, where starvation is weaponized against the civilian population, alongside indiscriminate attacks on infrastructure.
Secondly, the monitor examines women’s rights, focusing on legal changes across various countries and their impacts on women’s rights in different communities. It utilizes international standards and conventions to assess these developments.
The right to freedom of thought is another critical area of focus, particularly regarding the prosecution of academics and students for activism. This report reviews recent incidents illustrating the suppression of intellectual freedom in the region.
Additionally, this Human Rights Monitor provides updates on the right to participate, following last month’s focus. It discusses electoral processes, changes to laws, and public engagement in elections across the Arab region.
Lastly, the report evaluates social protection policies aimed at improving socioeconomic conditions. It looks at how governments are addressing communities’ access to essential services like healthcare and education.
Overall, these six priorities provide a comprehensive overview of human rights conditions, aiming to promote a higher quality of life in the region by enforcing international legal standards.
