The ACHRS Human Rights Monitor provides a comprehensive review of key developments in six priority areas affecting human rights in the Arab world during September. Our analysis evaluates how these developments impact fundamental rights, using international humanitarian law as a framework.
The right to life faces serious violations worldwide. In the Middle East and North Africa, state-sanctioned legislation has led to executions and extrajudicial killings. These actions often target specific groups for political motives. In Gaza, the genocide against Palestinians involves weaponizing starvation and indiscriminately attacking civilian infrastructure.
In the women’s rights section, we examine recent legal changes impacting women across the region. We analyze the human rights implications of these changes, highlighting both progress and setbacks according to international standards and conventions.
Freedom of thought is essential for democracy. This month’s monitor explores how governments in the region prosecute academics and students for their activism, revealing threats to intellectual freedom.
Following last month’s focus on participation rights, this edition updates developments in electoral processes and changes to electoral laws. We emphasize public participation levels in various Arab countries, showcasing the importance of civic engagement.
Lastly, we review social protection policies in the region, focusing on how governments assist communities in improving their socioeconomic conditions. Access to vital services such as healthcare and education remains crucial.
