On July 15\u201316, 2025, the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies (ACHRS) participated in a two-day workshop organized by the OHCHR Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) in cooperation with the Phenix Center for Economic and Informatics Studies. The workshop, held in Amman, aimed to strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations to engage effectively with the UN human rights system, particularly in relation to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).<\/span><\/p>\n

Representing ACHRS, our International Relations and Communications Coordinator, Zain Al Jawhari, took part in the sessions, which provided valuable insights and practical tools for aligning local human rights advocacy with international mechanisms.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first day focused on understanding how the UN human rights system functions and identifying the various entry points through which civil society can contribute\u2014such as the Human Rights Council, Special Procedures, and the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). The discussions highlighted the importance of strategic engagement and timely reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n

The second day was dedicated to Jordan\u2019s obligations under the ICESCR and its relationship with the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR). Participants analyzed Jordan\u2019s treaty body reporting history, examined gaps in implementation, and took part in a simulation exercise on how to monitor and report on state compliance. The practical component offered a hands-on opportunity to develop skills in drafting shadow reports and following up on international recommendations.<\/span><\/p>\n

ACHRS remains committed to strengthening civil society\u2019s voice in international fora and advancing rights-based accountability in Jordan.
