As of December 2024, Sudan is grappling with one of the most severe humanitarian
\ncrises in modern history.
\nThe war has devastated over 25.6 million people\u2014more than half the population\u2014
\nincluding 14 million children facing extreme starvation. Several regions, such as North
\nDarfur, have descended into famine, reaching IPC Phase 5, the highest level of food
\ninsecurity. The UN has described this as the largest hunger crisis ever recorded in a
\nsingle country, with over one-fifth of the population in famine-stricken areas suffering
\nfrom starvation, malnutrition, and death. Malnutrition among young children is
\nparticularly dire, with over 3.1 million children under five suffering from severe acute
\nmalnutrition, a condition with a mortality rate of up to 50% if untreated. UNICEF
\nreports that a child dies every five minutes in Sudan\u2019s conflict zones due to starvation
\nor related complications. The destruction of supply chains and the scarcity of resources
\nhave exacerbated the crisis, leaving humanitarian organizations struggling to meet the
\noverwhelming need.
\nThe conflict, now in its 20th month, is among the deadliest in the world, ranking fourth
\naccording to ACLED. Documented fatalities have surpassed 29,600, though estimates
\nsuggest a death toll exceeding 150,000. Civilians endure relentless targeted violence,
\nwidespread displacement, and grave violations of international law. Over 8.6 million
\npeople have been displaced internally, while more than 3.1 million have fled to
\nneighboring countries like Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt. This mass exodus has
\noverwhelmed regional resources and infrastructure, creating one of the world\u2019s most
\npressing refugee crises and leaving millions without adequate shelter or support.<\/p>\n
