{"id":2066,"date":"2020-11-23T14:10:02","date_gmt":"2020-11-23T12:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/achrs.org\/english\/?p=2066"},"modified":"2021-07-26T15:20:43","modified_gmt":"2021-07-26T12:20:43","slug":"on-international-day-for-the-elimination-of-violence-against-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/achrs.org\/english\/2020\/11\/23\/on-international-day-for-the-elimination-of-violence-against-women\/","title":{"rendered":"ACHRS Statement On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In observance of the <strong>International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women<\/strong> on November 25, the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies is proud to reaffirm its commitment to defending the rights of women and girls around the world to live free from violence.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Gender-based violence<\/strong> is a global problem that harms millions of women and girls and their communities and families every year. It is present in all aspects of life: in<strong> educational <\/strong>settings, in <strong>politics<\/strong>, in the<strong> workplace<\/strong> and in the <strong>home<\/strong>. Gender-based violence is a scourge that further weakens women within a system that is already discriminatory. Its forms are multiple and experienced all over the world. They include :<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>intimate partner violence (battering, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide);<\/li>\n<li>sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual advances, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber- harassment);<\/li>\n<li>human trafficking (slavery, sexual exploitation);<\/li>\n<li>female genital mutilation; and<\/li>\n<li>child marriage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ACHRS reaffirms that violence against women constitutes <strong>violations of human rights<\/strong> and impedes the full enjoyment of the rights and freedoms to which they are entitled,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recognizing the inherent <strong>dignity<\/strong> that every woman and girl possesses and is committed to defending the<strong> safety<\/strong> and <strong>security <\/strong>of women and girls around the world and to cultivating their development as future leaders,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recognizing that violence against women reflects<strong> historically unequal power<\/strong> relations between men and women, which have led to <strong>domination <\/strong>and <strong>discrimination<\/strong> by men and have hindered the advancement of women, and that today, throughout the world, it is reflected in the <strong>subordination<\/strong> of women to men,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alarmed that women face difficulties in achieving legal, social, political and economic equality in society, due in part to the persistence and <strong>endemic nature<\/strong> of the violence they suffer,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Arguing that violence against women is part of a complex system of domination, gendered but also linked to <strong>social class<\/strong> and <strong>racial domination<\/strong>, their elimination should be part of the <strong>eradication of racism<\/strong> and the ever-increasing <strong>social and economic inequalities<\/strong> around the world,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Confirming that the <strong>health crisis<\/strong> situation of COVID-19<strong> has aggravated<\/strong> gender-based violence,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Noting with concern that certain groups of women, including minority women, indigenous women, refugee women, migrant women, women living in rural and remote communities, destitute women, women internees, women prisoners, girls, women with disabilities, elderly women and women in areas of armed conflict,<strong> are particularly vulnerable<\/strong> to violence,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Acknowledging that women in vulnerable situations are the first to be affected by such violence and that the fight against it must be part of a <strong>global fight against poverty<\/strong>, but also access to <strong>healthcare<\/strong>, access to <strong>education<\/strong>, freedom to exercise <strong>citizenship<\/strong> and political voice, the right to a <strong>fair legal system<\/strong>, the fight against armed conflict and the targeting of civilians, and support of <strong>human dignity<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Renewing its support to women&#8217;s movements for <strong>de facto equality<\/strong> around the world and in the Middle East, to international and national organizations fighting against gender-based violence, to states committed to suppressing such violence, to activists and journalists <strong>exposing crimes and violence <\/strong>against women,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recommending that states<strong> fulfill their commitments<\/strong> contained in <strong>ratified international treaties<\/strong> to promote women&#8217;s <strong>education<\/strong> and <strong>emancipation<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But also to non-governmental and international organizations, the media, public institutions and civil society to work together to <strong>shed light on the violence<\/strong>, to understand the issues at stake and their eradication,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ensuring that the response to gendered violence is found in<strong> a society<\/strong> that is<strong> egalitarian<\/strong> in all respects, <strong>educated<\/strong>, <strong>democratic<\/strong> and <strong>transparent<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies, as an organization promoting international human rights, declares <strong>its support<\/strong> for the Elimination of Violence against Women in the Middle East and around the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>On November 25<\/strong>, 2020, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, ACHRS is organizing a <strong>virtual conference<\/strong> at <strong>5:00 PM CET<\/strong> on the theme &#8220;<strong>Gendered vulnerabilities for displaced women in the Middle East amidst COVID-19<\/strong>&#8221;
