Today, the charter continues to represent a shared global value of human rights and dignity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 10pt;\"> The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies would like to celebrate the vast accomplishments of the UN in promoting international peace and security. In the face of globalization, climate crisis, gender inequality, and armed conflict, the United Nations remains a protecting force in international law and humanitarian action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 10pt;\">In light of the UN Panel on Cutting Military Spending and Converting Militarized Economies on October 23rd, the Amman Center for Human Rights Studies would like to emphasize that international security should not come at the cost of increased military spending. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, there has been a 2.6% growth in military expenditure between 2017 and 2018, leading to the highest level of military spending since 1988<em><sup>1<\/sup><\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Three of the permanent members of the Security Council, namely the United States of America, France and China, rank in the top five biggest spenders; we call these countries to set an example and decrease their military expenditures. The maintenance of international peace, sustainable development, and protection of human rights can only be achieved if the international community collectively advocates&nbsp; for disarmament. ACHRS advises that the United Nations encourage Member States to decrease their military spending, specifically incentivizing members of the Security Council to initiate this change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 10pt;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'times new roman', times; font-size: 10pt;\">The Amman Center for Human Rights Studies acknowledges the significant work accomplished in the field of education and the right to health; however, there is still progress to be made. Education serves as a primary tool of empowerment for individuals to participate in social, political, and economic life. Protecting and promoting the right to education for each child, especially focusing on the right to education for women and girls, is a crucial issue that continues to require special attention. ACHRS recommends more resources be directed towards country visits to monitor education systems, establish spaces for dialogue between civil society and government, and respond to reports of violations. Furthermore, access to equal and extensive healthcare is yet to be realized globally. Stronger efforts must be made to fulfill the right of every person to preventative care, treatment, health-related information, and sanitary environmental conditions.
