IN A NUTSHELL
ACHRS Statement TurkeyWithdrawalofIstanbulConventionIn March, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention, a human rights treaty of the Council of Europe drafted in 2011 to combat violence against women and domestic violence. Last Thursday, Turkey officially withdrew from the convention.
Violence against women and domestic violence is a violation of the human rights of the “right to life”, “right to physical, mental and moral integrity”, “right to security of person”, and “equal rights of men and women.”
ACHRS condemns Turkey’s decision to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention as it demonstrates a lack of protection of these human rights.
